How did you all feel being the first AS Board members to go to Viqueen Lodge by yourselves? It was really fun, and I feel like it solidified the group even more. I feel like we felt a lot of trust was placed upon us, which was nice, and we felt very independent and able to be responsible without having “adult” supervision (even though we are all adults).
What were the benefits of having that type of trust and freedom? It gave us more confidence in our abilities and it foreshadowed the trust that was going to be placed on us as students and our abilities. What were some personal highlights from that trip? By the end I felt a lot more comfortable with everyone. I feel like we shared some very personal things that only that group will be able to understand since we are always in such close quarters. I now know when someone is feeling down or stressed and have a good idea of what might help them feel better. Sometimes it is about leaving them alone because that’s what they need, or other times is to sit there with them and hug them to make them feel better. We have a huge range of personalities and needs and that helped.
What did you accomplish as a group? We built great relationships and identified our goals for the year in order to keep everyone accountable throughout the year. We talked a little bit about some of our fears so we helped each other ease those a little bit.
How important was the Viqueen Lodge trip to your overall training? I think it was key to say the least. I also think it was really key to have gone by ourselves. We started the year really strong, and there was a little bit of conflict but we were able to solve it by ourselves and talk it out.
Would you recommend this practice be repeated for future board members? Yes!!!! YES YES!
